FitBuddies
FitBuddies is a wellness platform designed around a simple but powerful insight:
People don’t need more workouts. They need consistency and connection.
FitBuddies helps you train live with a friend, and when schedules don’t align, a calm, supportive AI (AI Lite) steps in to keep you moving.
This project explores how to balance human connection, AI support, and sustainable motivation without pressure or intimidation.
- Train together from anywhere
- Reduce anxiety with an optional video
- Privacy you control
My role: Product Designer
Scope: Product strategy, UX flows, AI interaction design, monetization model, landing experience.
Timeline: Jan – Feb, 2026
Deliverables: Research synthesis; UI for Landing, Profile, Active Buddy Workout (Next: Solo AI Workout flow)

Problem
Staying on track with workouts is one of the biggest challenges in personal wellness.
Common barriers include:
- Workout partners live far apart.
- Video calls feel awkward in a gym (privacy and anxiety).
- It’s hard to stay in sync (rest times, sets, pacing).
- Accountability drops when training alone
- Missed sessions quickly turn into quitting
“I’d love to work out with my cousin, but we live 50 miles apart. We tried Zoom, but we couldn’t stay in sync, so we kept skipping.”
— Alla, 39, Enfield, MA
Solution
FitBuddies is built around two integrated modes:
🧑🤝🧑 Buddy Sessions
Users schedule and complete live workouts with a friend.
Key elements:
- Shared timers and synced workout plans
- Reminders and easy rescheduling
- Visible streak tracking
- Mutual accountability loop
The emotional anchor of the product is showing up for someone else.
🤖 AI Lite Support
When schedules don’t align, the user can switch to AI Lite.
AI Lite provides:
- Gentle text prompts during workouts
- Adjustable feedback intensity
- Clear communication when AI is unsure
- Optional camera usage
AI is intentionally designed to be calm and restrained, reinforcing effort without judgment.
Example microcopy:
“I may not be fully confident about your form. Adjust camera if you’d like more guidance.”
This builds trust rather than authority.
Design principles
- Human-first accountability: Buddy Sessions remain the emotional anchor.
- Low-pressure support: Calm tone, minimal “coach-y” language.
- Transparency and control: Camera optional; users control what they share.
- Low barrier to entry: A free tier that lets people try the habit loop before committing.
Key product decisions
🧍🏽♂️Buddy-First Positioning
Why it matters: Buddy sessions create a social anchor, the reason people come back. AI is a backup support, not a replacement.
What it does: Enables training together with/without video, keeps each other accountable, and if the schedule fails, uses AI support.
🤖 AI Lite: Calm and Optional
Instead of flashy metrics or intense coaching, feedback is:
- Supportive
- Low-pressure
- Honest about uncertainty
This aligns with wellness psychology, encouraging action without intimidation.
Key Screens
Landing page: communicates the dual path
The landing experience clarifies:
- Buddy-first approach
- AI as optional support
- Free community entry point
- Trust signals: camera optional, user control, designed with care
Tone stays warm and human:
“Some days you need a friend. Some days you just need a gentle nudge.”

Profile Page: ownership and progress
Reinforces:
- Streak visibility
- Session history
- Buddy management

Active buddy workout: stay in sync, finish together
This is the core FitBuddies moment: a shared workout in real time.
Designed for clarity and pacing:
- Shared session status and controls (pause, nudge buddy, leave, and “end for both” with confirmation)
- Optional video / Ghost Mode for camera on or off
- Workout structure at a glance (rounds, progress, next up, and exercise completion)
- Synced rest timer to keep users aligned
- Buddy updates and quick reactions for lightweight encouragement
Goal: reduce friction, keep both people moving, and make finishing together feel achievable

This project deepened my understanding of:
- Human-centered AI UX
- Behavioral design for wellness
- Product strategy for retention
Impact (Projected for MVP Testing)
Expected outcomes:
- Session completion rate: % of started sessions that reach “Completed” (overall + by Buddy vs AI Lite mode).
- Weekly consistency: average workouts per user per week + % of users hitting 3 sessions/week.
- Buddy follow-through: % of scheduled Buddy Sessions that are completed, rescheduled, or no-show.
- Drop-off protection: when a buddy cancels, % of users who switch to AI Lite and still complete a session within 24 hours.
Takeaway
FitBuddies turns “I should work out” into “I’ll show up” by combining human connection, synced pacing, and gentle AI support that respects privacy and reduces performance anxiety.
